Brooks Range, a mountain range in northern Alaska. It extends east-west in a gentle curve, separating Alaska's North Slope from the Yukon River lowlands. The Philip Smith, Endicott, De Long, and Baird mountains are the chief components of the range. Elevations are low in the west but rise to more than 9,000 feet (2,740 m) in the east. Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Noatak National Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park, and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge occupy most of the Brooks Range. A road and a petroleum pipeline from Prudhoe Bay cross the range. The entire area is virtually uninhabited.
