Connecticut River, the longest river in New England. It rises in New Hampshire, flows south between that state and Vermont, crosses western Massachusetts and central Connecticut, and empties into Long Island Sound. Its length is 400 miles (640 km). Small craft can sail up the stream as far as the Massachusetts border.
