The Salt River
Salt River, a river in southern Arizona. It is formed by the junction of the Black and White rivers in the White Mountains. Its course runs westward for 200 miles (320 km) to the Gila River near Phoenix. Because of damming and water diversion upstream, the westernmost portion of the riverbed is usually dry. The lower Salt valley is the most populated part of the state and an important irrigated area, producing cotton, hay, citrus fruits, and other crops. Water for irrigation, urban use, and hydroelectric power is provided by the Salt River Project, which includes five dams on the Salt and two on the Verde.
